Group 5: Kelly, Scott, and Andrew

"Pedro and Me" by Judd Winick

We feel the panel from page 156 is depicting the moments immediately following Pedro’s passing. There appears to be a Nurse in the picture turning and walking away from Pedro’s bed with the sheets that were brought to change his bed. It was at this moment the report came that Pedro was gone. Immediately after the news, Pedro’s friends and family gathered around his bed, there were some with their heads hung low in sadness and there was a couple next to his bed that had their arms around one another, appearing to be a comforting gesture amongst each other. Pedro is in a motionless and peaceful position upon his bed and covered by a sheet. We think that this is a pivotal point in the book, not an end but a beginning, we say this because we don’t feel that Pedro was ever afraid of dying; he only feared not being able to spread his personal story and life saving information to many more people. Pedro made his silent and peaceful departure; naturally this is a life event that would be filled with sadness. Furthermore we feel that the size of the panel represents, from Pedro’s point of view, his own death, which was truly insignificant to him. It was without a doubt, his message that was most important to Pedro. In addition there is an absence of text in the panel, because Pedro’s death was silent and it was the type of moment that lasted forever because it was so painful for those who were gathered around him. The darkness surrounding the panel represents the sadness that his friends and family felt, as well as portraying the deep silence of Pedro’s passing. We strongly feel that a new beginning came from the conclusion of Pedro’s life on earth, believing this is when Judd really finds himself and gives his own life significance. Judd finds true love in Pam; he finds his calling and passion in life through Pedro as he “passes the torch” so to speak. Pedro was a gracious, accepting and peaceful person. After Pedro’s passing Judd embodies, through time, his vitality, passion and graciousness in so many aspects of his own life, while continuing Pedro’s life works. Spreading Pedro’s story to touch and educate as many as he can, educating people to remember that HIV+ people are people, they have a name and they have a face, just like the one of Pedro Zamora.

  1. I feel you did a very good job. When I read your analysis I get a very clear picture of what is being told. I like how you view Pedro's passing as a new beginning on earth for Judd. I do feel there is a couple of the questions missing in your writings.

  2. You did a very good job in describing the panel. It was easy to picture it in my mind and follow with what you were saying. When you spoke about it being a beginning instead of end for Pedro was a great way to interpret that panel. Your reasoning behind why you thought it was a beginning is very strong. I liked your comment about the size of the photo and how it was significant to how Pedro felt about his own death. I think this is a very thoughtful analysis.

  3. I think you did a good job in analysis and defend your though of the panel. I like the recognition that Pedro’s death is the end but a new beginning in many aspects. However, I would suggest to talk a little more about the details of the panel. For me, the focal of the panel is Pedro lying comfortably on his bed. Furthermore, the contrast between black and white can be interpreted as a symbol for something good coming out of a worst situation. Overall, good work.

  4. I think that you did a great job analyzing the panel. You pointed out significant features of the panel that are important because there was no text. Although the picture itself is small, it is a very strong panel. You also did a great job analyzing the emotion and feelings that others have in the panel after Pedro's death. By focusing on their body positions and your descriptions I was able to get a clear idea about the feelings in the panel.

  5. I liked you attention to the details in the panel you provided being there is not text to assist in interpretation. I also liked on how you focused on his death was just a new beginning, or chapter in his life and it wasn’t the end of Pedro. Your post was also very clean and easy to follow. Very nice job!

  6. I like the way you did this picture, considering my group did the same one it was neat to see how you described it vs how we described it. The only thing is, it doesn't seem like you wrote to much on what you thought was the reasoning for the color scheme. I really enjoyed reading this blog because it made me think about it differently then when we wrote about it.
